Blizzard to revamp WoW archaeology for Last Titan

During a recent Q&A in the official WoW Portal Room Discord, Game Director Ion Hazzikostas acknowledged that several secondary professions need a closer look and that archaeology is under discussion for the Last Titan expansion.

Hazzikostas wrote on the server that archaeology’s core fantasy is still appealing: “The fantasy of it is great. Some of the things you could get from it and feeling like some of the lore tidbits that were revealed through archaeology. I think there’s a lot of value there.”

He noted the team moved away from active development on archaeology after engagement data and player feedback showed limited interest in the profession’s moment-to-moment gameplay. Hazzikostas added the team is exploring ways to deliver the research and relic-collection elements in a way that is “more fun in a moment to moment sense.”

Archaeology remains playable and older content is still available. The profession has received little new material since the Shadowlands expansion in 2020, and the last significant archaeology content arrived during Battle for Azeroth more than five years ago.

Blizzard has not committed to specific systems or a timeline. The studio aims to preserve archaeology’s lore and collectible rewards for World of Warcraft accounts while improving the activity’s day-to-day gameplay, and developers are discussing potential improvements for Last Titan.

For now, players must wait for further development updates tied to the Last Titan rollout.
