Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse names Rose Belmont as lead
Developers say Rose Belmont, daughter of Trevor and Sypha, became protagonist for narrative reasons; she inherits Sypha’s curse and seeks to avenge her mother in 1499 Paris.
Evil Empire and Motion Twin developed Rose Belmont as the protagonist of Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse during narrative development. Rose is Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades’s daughter; she inherits Sypha’s curse and enters a castle that appears in Paris in 1499 to pursue her mother’s fate.
Director Yukiko Hokao said the team did not set the protagonist’s gender at the start of development. While the world and plot were being built, the creators found the role fit best as Trevor Belmont’s daughter and adjusted the lead accordingly.
Early drafts positioned Sypha’s death before the game’s events. As writers and designers refined that thread, they focused the story on the parent-child relationship and made it the emotional center of Rose’s journey.
Creative director Emmanuel Nouaille described the narrative link between mother and daughter as providing a clear motivation for Rose. He added, “There is a strong connection between the two, and it gives her a clear motivation to avenge her mother’s death and face her cruel fate.”
Belmont’s Curse is set 23 years after Dracula’s Curse. The plot follows Rose as she descends into a castle that has materialised in Paris. Konami lists the title as the 26th mainline Castlevania entry and as the start of multiple new series products.
The game is being developed by Evil Empire and Motion Twin, the studios behind Dead Cells and The Rogue Prince of Persia. Konami plans to release Belmont’s Curse later in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC.
Developers say Rose’s inheritance of Sypha’s curse connects the new story to the Belmont and Belnades lineages and provides the central drive for the protagonist’s arc.
