Axe disappears from Dota 2, returns as mechanical 'Axe?' - news.goranked

Axe was removed from Dota 2’s roster this week and reappeared as a clockwork construct listed as ‘Axe?’, with a hammer, winding key and updated ability icons.

Players who logged into Dota 2 this week found Axe missing from the hero lineup; his slot briefly showed a poster-style missing-person image. Hours later the hero returned to the roster under the name ‘Axe?’ as a mechanical construct with visible gears, a large winding key in his back and a hammer in place of his traditional axe.

The new model features jolting movement animations and a full set of redesigned ability icons to match the construct theme. Soon after the update went live, attempts to play as or target ‘Axe?’ caused game crashes that appeared linked to effects interacting with the hero. Valve issued a patch that addressed those crashes, and players can now select and use the updated model without encountering the reported errors.

The roster change follows recent community discussion about a possible ‘Dark Carnival’ theme and the arrival of a new puppeteer hero, Ringmaster. Previously, Valve renamed Dota 2 ‘Dark Carnival’ variable after to ‘Why are you guys reading our variable names?’. A launch trailer released two years ago showed a carnival-style contraption that pulled Axe into a fog of gears and smog; players have connected the trailer imagery and last week’s event rumors to the new ‘Axe?’ model.

Valve has not confirmed whether the appearance of ‘Axe?’ marks the start of an in-game event or whether additional heroes will be altered. No official announcement has been posted with an event date or full scope of content changes.

Axe has been a long-standing character in Dota 2. The temporary removal, visual overhaul and brief stability issues are the most recent notable changes to the hero’s in-game presentation since promotional material introduced Ringmaster.
