Dota 2 download size is one of those numbers that never stays useful for long. Valve drops another patch, the files change, and an old guide can suddenly be off by several gigabytes. There’s another catch too: what Steam downloads and what Dota 2 eventually takes up on your drive are two different numbers.

As of August 12, 2026, SteamDB puts the Dota 2 download size at about 33 GB. Once installed, the Windows version takes up roughly 72 GB with English selected and no DLC. So how many GB is Dota 2? It depends on whether you mean the compressed download or the space the finished installation occupies.

Steam isn’t sending you the full 72 GB over the internet. The Dota 2 download comes compressed, then Steam installs the game files locally. That’s where the bigger number comes from.

What is the download size of Dota 2? That figure matters for bandwidth and download time. The Dota 2 size in GB after installation is the number to check if you’re trying to squeeze the game onto an SSD or an older HDD.

Steam’s own store page makes this a little messy. The Dota 2 system requirements still list 60 GB of available storage, while the current Windows installation can already go beyond that. I wouldn’t plan a fresh install around the 60 GB figure.

Around 90–100 GB free is a much safer starting point, although Valve doesn’t list that as an official requirement. The extra space gives Steam somewhere to work when patches arrive and temporary update files are created. How to Check Dota 2 Download Size on Steam

That’s also worth checking before you download Dota 2. You clear what looks like enough space, start the install, and then realize the SSD is almost full because half your Steam library is already there. Better to check first.

3. Select Properties.
4. Open Installed Files.
5. Check the space used on the drive.
