ESRB rates Marvel’s Wolverine Mature for graphic violence

The ESRB rated Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine Mature 17+, citing blood and gore, dismemberment, partial nudity, strong language and a fentanyl reference; the PS5 exclusive launches Sept. 15, 2026.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board assigned Marvel’s Wolverine a Mature 17+ rating, applying content descriptors for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, Strong Language and Drug Reference. The rating carries an In-Game Purchases label. Insomniac Games has set the PlayStation 5 exclusive for release on Sept. 15, 2026.

The ESRB summary describes combat that uses Wolverine’s claws to slash, stab and slice enemies. Rage modes speed up combo attacks and enable slow-motion finishers. The board cited graphic head stabbings, frequent blood-splatter effects, screams of pain, dismemberment and decapitation during fights. It noted battlefields that are “sometimes strewn with torsos and limbs.” Cutscenes reportedly show characters tearing enemies apart and decapitating soldiers, and several sequences briefly display exposed buttocks. Dialogue contains repeated expletives and a direct reference to fentanyl production.

The In-Game Purchases label indicates some form of post-launch monetization, but Insomniac and the publisher have not specified whether that will include cosmetics, a season pass or other paid content. No further details on microtransaction mechanics or scope have been released.

Insomniac and Marvel have described the title as darker in tone than the studio’s Spider-Man games. A recent trailer identified The Hand, Omega Red and Bolivar Trask as antagonists. Wolverine’s established character and the game’s described combat elements correspond with the explicit content listed by the ESRB.

Marvel’s Wolverine will be available at launch only on PlayStation 5, with boxed and digital editions planned for the Sept. 15, 2026 release.
