Final Fantasy XIV Mobile to close in China on Sept. 30, 2026
Final Fantasy XIV Mobile will shut down in China on Sept. 30, 2026 after Square Enix and Tencent ended their licensing agreement; the global release has been canceled.
Square Enix and Tencent have ended the licensing agreement for Final Fantasy XIV Mobile, and the Lightspeed Studios version will close in China on Sept. 30, 2026. The planned global release has been canceled and new account registration and in-game purchases have been disabled.
Lightspeed Studios, which is owned by Tencent, confirmed the termination and said the agreement was ended “through amicable negotiation,” citing “adjustments in business operations and changes in the market environment” as the reasons. The developer set the game closure date for Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026 and announced that forums and customer support will close on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026.
Final Fantasy XIV Mobile began as a standalone sister project to Final Fantasy XIV. The project was announced in November 2024 and launched in China in June 2025. The release recreated the majority of the A Realm Reborn content in a mobile format and included new cosmetic items, streamlined menus and several quality-of-life features that differed from the PC and console versions.
Players discussed whether some mobile elements could be adopted for the main MMORPG. In recent weeks users noticed fewer updates and broken links on official pages, and those signs preceded the announcement by Lightspeed and Square Enix.
The developer posted a message thanking players for their support and apologizing for the shutdown. The message said, “Thank you for your support for Final Fantasy 14 Mobile,” and added, “we sincerely apologize that we must end this service without being able to fully live up to your expectations.” The team also apologized to players who had been awaiting the global release.
As of July 17, 2026, Lightspeed removed the ability to register new accounts and to make microtransaction top-ups. The company did not include technical details about the shutdown or offer a compensation plan for existing users in its statement.
Square Enix and Tencent have not announced any plans for another mobile adaptation of Final Fantasy XIV. The Lightspeed-developed version will end service roughly 15 months after its initial launch in China.
