Former Rockstar producer: GTA 6 skips PC at launch - news.goranked

A former Rockstar producer says GTA 6 will launch on consoles first; a separate PC edition is expected later as the studio prioritizes console optimization and testing.

Former Rockstar producer John Ricchio explained that Grand Theft Auto VI will not be available on PC at its initial release. The title will debut on current consoles, with a PC edition planned for a later date.

Ricchio cited development and business priorities, noting the studio is concentrating resources on optimizing the game for fixed console hardware and meeting a set release schedule. He said the team wants to deliver a stable experience on the platforms targeted for launch.

Technical complexity was highlighted as a major factor. Ricchio pointed to the game’s large open world and advanced systems, which increase the testing and quality-assurance burden when supporting a wide range of PC hardware alongside consoles.

According to the producer, staggering the releases lets developers focus on tuning performance and fixing issues for one primary build before adapting the game to the variable configurations of PCs. He added that the approach reduces the risk of platform-specific problems at launch.

Commercial considerations also influenced the choice. Ricchio noted that platform partnerships and marketing plans can align more cleanly with a console-first rollout, and that prioritizing consoles helps provide a consistent launch experience for the Grand Theft Auto V accounts base while allowing more time to prepare a separate PC version.

A PC port was not ruled out. The producer indicated a PC edition could follow after the console launch once optimizations, additional testing and commitments to ongoing patches and online services for PC are in place.

Rockstar and other major publishers have previously released large titles on consoles before bringing them to PC. Players and retailers will await an official timeline from the publisher for any later PC edition.
