Fortnite returns to Australia’s iPhone App Store

Fortnite is available again on Australia’s iPhone App Store after an Australian court ruling required Apple to allow third-party app stores and alternative payments.

Fortnite has returned to Australia’s iPhone App Store after Australian courts required Apple to allow third-party app stores and alternative payment methods on its devices.

The return follows changes to Apple’s App Store policies in Australia. Developers can distribute apps through third-party storefronts and offer alternative payment systems for in-app purchases.

Epic Games and Apple have been involved in a legal dispute for more than six years. The conflict began in 2020, when Epic added a direct payment option to Fortnite’s iOS app. Apple then removed the game from the App Store.

Fortnite’s return gives Australian iPhone and iPad users an official way to download the game again. The game is also available on Android devices, consoles and computers.

The Australian case is part of a series of legal and regulatory challenges to Apple’s control over app distribution and payments on iOS. Similar changes to Apple’s App Store rules have taken place in other markets.
