Funcom Cuts Jobs After Dune: Awakening Console Launch
Funcom is restructuring and cutting jobs after Dune: Awakening launched on consoles Sept. 22. The number of affected employees has not been disclosed.
Funcom is reducing its workforce after releasing Dune: Awakening on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on Sept. 22, 2026. The Norwegian game developer has not disclosed how many employees are affected.
The cuts are part of a restructuring tied to the transition from developing Dune: Awakening to operating it as a live-service game. Funcom has reduced staffing in some departments following the work required to create and launch the survival game.
Funcom also announced that CEO Rui Casais will leave the company. Scott Junior will replace him as CEO. Junior has worked at Funcom for 22 years.
Casais described Dune: Awakening as one of the largest projects in Funcom’s history. The game required teams across the company, and Funcom cannot retain every employee who worked on its development. The company plans to handle the layoffs respectfully.
The restructuring will not end support for Dune: Awakening or Conan Exiles. Funcom plans to continue releasing content for both games and supporting their communities.
Dune: Awakening is a survival game set in the universe created by author Frank Herbert. It was previously released on PC before arriving on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
