GTA 6 leak appears nine days early, includes scam

Grand Theft Auto VI files circulated online nine days before release; some downloads contained fake activation steps requesting payments or personal data.

Files for Grand Theft Auto VI began circulating online nine days before the game’s scheduled launch, appearing on peer-to-peer networks and fan forums. Several download packages advertised playable copies before release.

Some packages included fake activation steps that asked users to enter credit card details or complete paid surveys. Other downloads required signing up for third-party services or running installers that requested elevated system permissions.

Users who installed these packages reported a range of problems. Installers redirected some users to sites demanding payment or personal information in exchange for an unlock key. Modified executables and installers triggered antivirus alerts on multiple machines. Community moderators and security scanners flagged many of the files as malicious or deceptive.

The early timing coincided with a spike in searches for pre-release copies. Many of the suspicious packages claimed to provide a playable build but required extra verification that served as the scam mechanism rather than legitimate activation.

Rockstar Games had not issued an official statement at the time of reporting. Unauthorized copies circulated ahead of the launch date, and the presence of scams made it difficult for users to identify any genuine early builds.

Previous entries in the series have faced pre-release leaks and piracy attempts; high-profile game launches commonly attract similar activity. Security professionals advise against downloading unofficial copies and recommend waiting for official distribution channels.

Users who believe they downloaded scamware are advised to remove suspicious files, run up-to-date antivirus scans and monitor financial accounts for unauthorized activity. Reporting suspicious packages and sites to platform moderators and security teams can help limit the spread of fraudulent downloads.
