GTA 6 narrows roads, adds car locks and theft tools

Rockstar’s GTA 6 narrows roads and raises traffic density, adds stronger vehicle security and a Waink app that shows locks, alarms, trackers and required theft tools.

Rockstar Games has changed driving and vehicle theft in Grand Theft Auto 6 by narrowing streets, increasing traffic density and adding stronger vehicle security and a new phone app called Waink.

Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, described the adjustments as a way to make driving require more attention, particularly in crowded areas where lanes are tighter and traffic is heavier.

Players can still take cars from drivers, but many parked vehicles will be protected by locks, loud alarms and built-in GPS trackers that can notify authorities if a theft is detected. Some parked cars will not be stealable immediately; players must advance the story and obtain specific equipment to bypass higher-security vehicles.

The Waink app, unlocked as players progress, lets users scan a vehicle to see whether it is locked, whether it has an alarm or tracker, how much it could be sold for, the cost to register it and which tool is required to take it. Developers cited tools such as key cloners and Slim Jims as examples, with different tools needed for different security levels.

Enhanced security creates more in-game consequences for theft. Tracked vehicles can alert police, and loud alarms increase the chance of drawing attention during an attempt. Narrower roads and denser traffic raise the likelihood of collisions and change pursuit and evasion dynamics.

Rob Nelson offered a guiding remark for players: “You should care about which cars you’re stealing.” The changes link vehicle access to story progression and player investment in gear and apps like Waink, making certain vehicles subject to specific security checks and required tools.
