GTA 6 PS5 retail codes will be region-locked, Rockstar confirms
Rockstar confirmed PS5 retail copies of Grand Theft Auto 6 include digital codes redeemable only in the purchase region; Xbox Series X|S physical codes are region-free. Japan codes expire Jan. 12, 2027.
Rockstar Games updated its FAQ on July 27, 2026, confirming that physical PlayStation 5 copies of Grand Theft Auto 6 include digital product codes that can only be redeemed in the region where they are sold. The company noted that physical Xbox Series X|S copies contain codes that are not region-locked.
The FAQ states, “these codes are locked to the region they are sold in,” and lists nine redemption regions worldwide. Those regions include North America (United States and Canada), Latin America (Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru and other supported countries) and a separate entry for Brazil; the United Kingdom; Japan; South Korea; Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates; a Rest of Asia group covering markets such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand and Indonesia; and a combined EMEA and Oceania region that covers most European countries plus Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India and Turkey.
Rockstar identified an additional limitation for Japan: product codes sold for that market must be redeemed by January 12, 2027. That date falls 170 days after the game’s scheduled release on November 19, 2026, and the company attributed the deadline to compliance with local law.
Retail packages for the PS5 edition will not include a physical disc and will instead contain only a redemption code. Because codes are tied to the sales region, customers who import a PS5 physical copy or receive one as a gift may be unable to redeem it unless they use an account linked to the same region as the purchase. Physical Xbox editions do not carry the same restriction and can be redeemed across regions.
Rockstar did not provide a detailed explanation for why the restriction applies only to the PS5 physical edition. The publisher’s FAQ sets out the regional boundaries and the Japanese expiry date but does not offer further technical or policy details about the PlayStation-specific limitation.
The announcement prompted criticism from some players who expected a disc-based PS5 release or region-free codes. Despite that reaction, GTA 6 remains near the top of pre-order charts. Analysts tracking advance sales estimate the publisher has generated hundreds of millions of dollars from digital pre-orders, and some forecasts project opening-week revenue between $3.3 billion and $5.2 billion if current digital purchase trends continue.
