Haunted Chocolatier delayed as ConcernedApe refines systems

Stardew Valley creator Eric ‘ConcernedApe’ Barone says Haunted Chocolatier is taking longer as he refines core systems and avoids sharing early screenshots.

Eric ‘ConcernedApe’ Barone wrote that development on Haunted Chocolatier is slower than some fans expect because he is refining many in-game systems and prefers not to publish early images.

Barone first announced the project in 2021. In his latest development update he described the work as deliberate and ongoing alongside updates to Stardew Valley.

He gave the game’s recipe book for making chocolates as a detailed example. Barone said he has adjusted the layout, the amount of information shown and the number of clicks required to complete tasks several times. He wrote that these changes aim to make the interface clear, efficient and pleasant to use.

Barone wrote that players should be able to reach their goals with as few clicks as possible and that the presented data must avoid being overwhelming or trivial. He said how information is grouped and displayed affects how comfortable players feel while using the system and that he wants interactions to produce moments of surprise and delight.

On sharing work in progress, Barone wrote that he is reluctant to post unfinished screenshots. He compared posting early images to offering a half-baked product and said he prefers to show work only when it better matches his final intent. He added that posting early material can create expectations that later changes may not meet.

Barone also noted he does not face pressure to rush the release for marketing reasons. He wrote that his position allows him to continue developing at his chosen pace and thanked followers for their patience.

The developer said many other systems in Haunted Chocolatier have gone through multiple iterations. He described the game as large and said frequent player interaction with its systems is one reason he is spending more time refining each element.

Barone closed the update by affirming that work continues and by thanking fans for their ongoing support.
