How to enter the Citadel of Penance in Mortal Shell 2
Enter the Citadel of Penance by retrieving a stolen gate lever in the ravine south of the gate, fast‑travelling from Gloomshade Grove to the ravine, or using the bridge teleport at One‑Legged Wolf.
The Citadel of Penance is a large walled fortress in the northwest region of Mortal Shell 2 that appears once the area is unlocked. Players who reach the main gate find a notice board indicating the gate lever was stolen and the thief fled into the ravine to the south.
From the main gate, follow the path that branches left and head downward until you reach a wider area overlooking the ocean. Entering that area triggers a miniboss fight against a larger, more aggressive spider‑like cube. Defeating the miniboss causes the Citadel Gate Lever to drop as loot. Carry the lever back to the gate and interact with the mechanism to open the main entrance.
If the Gloomshade Grove beacon is unlocked, fast travel there and follow the bridges that descend toward the coastal clearing. That route brings players to the same open area above the ocean from the opposite side and triggers the same miniboss encounter and lever drop. Approaching from Gloomshade Grove avoids backtracking from the gate.
The third route bypasses the main gate entirely. From the One‑Legged Wolf beacon on the eastern side of the map, head north toward a walled area and cross the nearby bridge. An interactable teleport device on the bridge railing sends players directly into a prison cell inside the Citadel. From inside the cell, destroy the lock to exit and begin exploring the fortress interior. The main gate remains closed unless the lever is found and operated from within.
Inside the Citadel players can encounter The Warden boss; defeating the boss grants the Eredrim shell. Recovering the lever before a full interior exploration leaves the main gate open for direct exit and reentry. Each entry route determines how early players can reach interior areas and which obstacles they must overcome.
