Minecraft movie vote ends; all finalist builds to appear

Mojang removed the community-made Tree Village from grand-prize contention after finding the entry used blocks from multiple biomes. The studio confirmed the winning Lightning Rod Lighthouse and every finalist build will appear in A Minecraft Movie Squared, with Tree Village included as an honorable mention.

The build competition was announced during the Minecraft Live showcase. Submissions were open to players who wanted their creations featured in the sequel, which is scheduled to open July 23, 2027. Mojang narrowed the entries to three finalists and opened a public vote.

Voting was underway when other players raised an eligibility issue. The Tree Village entry, submitted by Ben V., used blocks from more than one biome, a breach of the contest rules. As a result, Mojang removed the build from grand-prize consideration.

Francisco C.M.’s Lightning Rod Lighthouse was named the winner. Rosanna C.’s Copper Badlands Castle was listed as a runner-up and will appear in the film. Mojang added Iola Y.’s Tranquil Taiga Tower to the final roster after confirming the rule breach; Mojang said Tranquil Taiga Tower had originally been eliminated in the semi-finals and would have advanced if the irregularity had been detected earlier.

In a statement Mojang wrote, “While we appreciate that the build was created with good intentions, we ultimately had to remove the Tree Village build from grand prize consideration for this reason.” The studio noted the build had strong community support and backing from the judging panel, including the filmmakers, and that influenced the decision to include it as an honorable mention. “We try to put our community first in everything we do, and we think that including Tree Village follows that principle,” Mojang added.

Mojang said the filmmakers will decide how the community builds appear on screen and that “a few small adjustments may be made” to ensure they fit the movie’s needs while preserving each build’s creativity. The studio confirmed the full set of selected builds will appear either in the film or in the end credits.

Mojang characterized the solution as an equitable response after voting had already started, and said adding another build to the final roster created more opportunities to showcase community creativity. The Minecraft sequel brings back Jack Black and Jason Momoa as Steve and Garrett, with Kirsten Dunst playing Alex.
