Minecraft adds official seats after 17 years - news.goranked

Mojang added Cushion and Straw Bed to Java 26.3 Snapshot 3 and Bedrock Preview 26.40.30, the game’s first official seating items in 17 years.

Mojang added two new items to Minecraft’s test builds: the Cushion and the Straw Bed. They appear in Java 26.3 Snapshot 3 and Bedrock Preview 26.40.30 as part of the Game Drop 2026 trial builds.

Players can switch to the snapshot or preview through the Minecraft launcher to try the new items in-game. The Cushion first showed up in an earlier test build for the Game Drop, which also introduced a Dappled Forest biome.

The Cushion crafts from three wool slabs of any of the 16 colors to form a square seat. It must sit on a supporting block but has no collision box, allowing placement on the lower half of Wood Stairs to create a chair without clipping. Cushions can be placed on many surfaces and are intended for decorative seating.

When placed on Buttons or Pressure Plates, the Cushion will depress and break when sat on. Trapdoors do not break under use, offering more seating options. Cushions can be combined with snow stacks and other blocks to expand interior and exterior designs.

The Straw Bed crafts from three Hay Bales placed in a row. The recipe yields four Straw Beds that stack up to 16. These beds let players sleep through the night but do not set a spawn point, and each one breaks after use. The single-use beds are designed for temporary campsites and as rustic decorative items.

Recent building-focused additions in test builds include a Poplar Wood set, Wool Stairs and Slabs, and Shelf Mushrooms that interact with player movement. Mojang has acknowledged players using new wood pieces in unexpected ways, including the Poplar Trapdoor used as a makeshift toilet seat.

An in-game prompt reads: “Weary from all that hiking? Seek out an abandoned camp to rest your blocky bones on the Cushion.”

The snapshot and preview releases allow players to test the Cushion and Straw Bed and submit feedback before the full Game Drop release later in 2026.
