Paradox’s Afterworld aims to regain Hearts of Iron 4 players
Paradox Interactive says Afterworld offers a gentler learning curve and broader appeal to attract players who left Hearts of Iron 4.
At Gamescom 2026, Paradox Interactive presented Afterworld, a new grand strategy series set in a post-apocalyptic future United States. Game director Dan Lind framed the title as a way to reach players who abandoned Hearts of Iron 4 by offering an easier entry and a different experience from Paradox’s historical games.
Afterworld starts with basic survival tasks such as gathering food and securing shelter. Players expand from those beginnings to build strength, form alliances and confront immortal rulers called the Ancients. Factions represent groups that share values rather than individual characters, and players can follow military, restorative or cooperative paths.
Lind described the setting as a mix of familiar real-world elements and unexpected changes intended to encourage discovery. Some factions will block player plans, while others may be open to alignment, leaving room for player-driven outcomes rather than fully scripted narratives.
The team applied lessons from Hearts of Iron 4 to Afterworld’s design. Production will require specific steps — raw resources must be processed into finished goods — while automation is added where it reduces repetitive work. Paradox also reworked the mission system to be more flexible than Hearts of Iron’s structure, aiming to make objectives clearer without removing strategic choices.
Accessibility is a stated priority. Lind noted that many long-time players have less time to learn complex games and the studio wanted a smoother first experience. He said at Gamescom, “That first jump, basically, that’s what I’m thinking about a lot because there’s so much competition for your time, that I want that smoothness of entry.” Lind also pointed to the pauseable nature of grand strategy as a convenience for players with limited time.
Paradox intends Afterworld to sit alongside its existing strategy titles rather than replace any of them. The studio has not announced a release date. The game is available to wishlist on Steam as development continues.
