Path of Exile revamps skill gems, easing entry for new players

Grinding Gear Games removed gem-specific socket colors and rebalanced more than 150 skills in Patch 3.29. The update and Curse of the Allflame league launch July 24.

Grinding Gear Games released Patch 3.29 for Path of Exile on July 24, removing gem-specific socket colors and rebalancing more than 150 skills as part of the new Curse of the Allflame league.

Under the new system, gems no longer require red, green or blue sockets. Players can place any skill gem in any socket on gear, eliminating the previous itemization constraint that required matching socket colors to gem types. The studio says the change will make it easier for new players to equip skills and reduce friction for experienced players who swap equipment.

Patch 3.29 also adjusts over 150 existing abilities and adds 12 new skills. Among the additions are a class of effects called “Pacts,” which grant a boost in exchange for a negative affliction tied to the character. The developer focused many of the balance changes on spellcasting skills.

Game Director Mark Roberts expects “all kinds of new builds” to appear following the update and cited the team’s aim to move away from a long-standing starter-skill pattern. For several years, many new characters relied on a skill called Rolling Magma as a default leveling option. The studio indicated the rebalance could produce different options for early progression.

The Curse of the Allflame league introduces an ocean-themed expedition mechanic. Players map underwater routes and use air bubbles to traverse the seafloor while seeking loot. The league includes a revised crafting system that presents multiple possible upgrade outcomes and allows players to preview and choose one result. The developer says this reduces the risk of wasting crafting resources and helps players learn how individual crafting items affect gear.

Patch 3.29 went live at 1 p.m. PT / 4 p.m. ET / 9 p.m. BST / 10 p.m. CEST on July 24. Path of Exile remains free-to-play and is available through Steam and the game’s standalone launcher.

The studio stated the original game and Path of Exile 2 will continue to coexist, with updates alternating between the two titles. Path of Exile 2 is scheduled to reach a 1.0 release later this year and will become free-to-play at that time.

Developers described the socket and skill changes as part of a broader effort to reduce equipment restrictions while keeping the game’s core systems intact. The update changes how players build characters and how they interact with new loot and crafting options.
