Planet Zoo 2 Feature Focus: Aquariums, Sharks and Rays

Frontier Developments released the second Planet Zoo 2 Feature Focus video, Awesome Aquatics, showing aquarium construction, species and habitat-specific filtration. Planet Zoo 2 launches Oct. 13, 2026.

Frontier Developments released the second episode of its Feature Focus series, titled Awesome Aquatics, which details how players will build and manage aquariums in Planet Zoo 2. The video covers tank construction, guest viewing features such as glass tunnels, and the basic flow for creating marine, freshwater and brackish exhibits.

The footage shows aquarium construction follows similar steps to land-based habitats, so players familiar with the original Planet Zoo should find the process familiar. Blueprints from the Frontier Workshop will be available for players who prefer ready-made designs. Glass tunnels are presented as a guest feature that allows visitors to walk beneath swimming animals for close viewing.

Staff access is separated from guest areas by a dedicated aquarium gate so veterinarians and keepers can enter to check animals and refill feeders without disturbing visitors. The video explains that filtration systems differ between marine, freshwater and brackish setups; each habitat type requires a specific filtration arrangement to meet salinity and water-quality needs for different species.

The video lists several species players will manage, including the Hawksbill Turtle, Ocean Sunfish and Brown Trout, along with various sharks, rays and shoaling fish. Not all species are compatible, so players must plan exhibits to avoid predator-prey conflicts. Shoals grow over time, and if a freshwater tank becomes overcrowded surplus fish can be released into lakes on players’ wildlife reserves. The footage shows African tigerfish being released into a reserve with zebras, an example Frontier described as a way to build more diverse ecosystems across player-managed reserves.

Feature details emphasize operational limits and design trade-offs: habitat mixing is restricted by compatibility rules, filtration must match salinity and species requirements, and guest experience can be improved by structural features such as tunnels while staff tasks are simplified by separate service access.

Frontier confirmed the next Feature Focus episode will move above ground to cover bird species and aviary design. Planet Zoo 2 is scheduled to launch on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 on October 13, 2026.
