PlayStation to end new game discs in January 2028

Sony will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028; new releases will be available only as digital downloads or retail license codes.
Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed on the PlayStation Blog that it will end production of physical discs for all new PlayStation games releasing from January 2028. After that date, new titles will be available only as downloads from the PlayStation Store or as retail license codes.
The policy covers games that launch on or after January 1, 2028. Boxed copies and discs for games released before that date will continue to be produced and sold through normal retail channels.
Sony said the change reflects consumer preferences and market trends toward digital sales. The company said major releases that ship before the cutoff will still appear in physical form, though some boxed editions may contain a license code rather than a full disc. Sony has said Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled for November 2026, will be sold in a box that includes a code instead of the game on disc.
Under the new model, purchases will grant a license to access the software tied to a user account and the platform’s storefront rather than delivering a physical product. Digital licences can be affected by account suspensions, storefront policy changes or the delisting of titles.
Games released after January 2028 will not be available for lending, resale or offline archiving as a boxed disc. Physical copies remain playable independently of a store’s availability; an all-digital distribution model makes continued access to older titles dependent on publishers and platform operators keeping files and authentication systems online.
The change will affect players with limited internet capacity. Downloading large game files can be slow or costly for users with metered connections or low bandwidth; a physical disc has provided an alternative for faster installs and offline backups.
Sony set a clear timetable: discs will remain available for new PlayStation games released through December 2027. From January 2028 onward, new releases for PlayStation consoles will be distributed only as digital licences.
Earlier, hardware insider Kepler_L2 reported that the PS6 manufacturing cost rise could push its launch price to $999.
