Portal 2 rated Playable for Valve Steam Frame headset

Valve rated Portal 2 Playable for the Steam Frame headset, saying the game runs but does not support the device’s native resolution. Valve confirmed the Steam Frame will arrive this summer.

Valve assigned Portal 2 a “Playable” compatibility rating for the upcoming Steam Frame headset. The company said the game runs on the device but does not support the headset’s native resolution. Valve has confirmed the Steam Frame will launch sometime this summer.

Valve’s compatibility notes state Portal 2 uses the Steam Frame’s default controller configuration, displays controller icons correctly, applies default graphics settings that perform adequately, and shows readable interface text. The Playable rating reflects that the title operates on the headset while lacking full native-resolution support.

The Steam Frame uses higher per-eye resolution than Valve’s older Index headset, moving from 1,440 × 1,600 per eye on the Index to 2,160 × 2,160 per eye on the new device. The headset can also run games in standalone mode without a connected PC. Valve’s compatibility check for Portal 2 focused on standalone operation; compatibility when the Steam Frame is connected to a PC will depend on the user’s hardware, which Valve does not test.

Valve has integrated Steam Frame compatibility labels into the same system used for Steam Deck and the recently added Steam Machine rating. In that system, games are tested on the hardware and given one of three ratings. “Unsupported” indicates a game is effectively unplayable on the device due to missing support, incompatible anti-cheat, or controls that do not work. “Playable” indicates the game runs but may show issues or lack some features. “Verified” indicates the title functions as intended on the device.

Valve did not provide a specific release date for the Steam Frame beyond the summer window.
