Prime Video’s God of War recasts Kratos after on-set injury
Prime Video will recast Kratos after Ryan Hurst tore his bicep during a late-June stunt in Vancouver, requiring surgery and halting production.
Prime Video’s God of War series will recast Kratos after lead actor Ryan Hurst suffered a biceps tear while performing a stunt in late June on the Vancouver set. The injury required surgery and prompted an immediate production hiatus.
Medical estimates place basic recovery at four to six months and a return to full strength for a physically demanding role at up to a year. Production teams had planned to begin preparations in mid-August for a mid-October restart but concluded the recovery timeline would not fit the schedule.
Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios decided to replace Hurst after reviewing timing and logistics. Four episodes that had already been filmed with Hurst will be reshot with a new actor; no replacement has been announced.
Whether Callum Vinson, who plays Atreus, will be recast is still under review because of the gap in shooting. Other confirmed cast members are expected to remain, including Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Ed Skrein as Baldur and Alastair Duncan as Mimir.
The series was created by Ronald D. Moore and will stream on Prime Video. A release date has not been set.
Hurst had prepared extensively for the role, reportedly gaining about 40 pounds of muscle and training for months before production began. The recast and required reshoots will alter the production schedule and require new filming for scenes already completed.
