Rockstar Expects Faster Game Releases After GTA 6
Rockstar Games expects to release future titles faster after GTA 6, citing improvements to its engine, development tools and team. GTA 6 is due on consoles in November 2026.
Rockstar Games has spent eight years developing GTA 6, but executives expect the studio’s future games to take less time. The engine, tools and team created for GTA 6 are intended to support faster production. The game is scheduled to launch on consoles in November 2026 after two delays.
Rockstar initially planned to develop GTA 6 alongside Red Dead Redemption 2, according to development lead Rob Nelson. The scale of the western game required most of Rockstar, including senior leadership, to help complete it. Work on GTA 6 was pushed back by several years.
Red Dead Redemption 2 also gave Rockstar new technology and production experience that it later applied to GTA 6. When the first GTA 6 trailer arrived in December 2023, the company was targeting a 2025 release. Some developers working directly on the game were less confident that the target could be met.
Rockstar’s head of publishing, Jennifer Kolbe, later sought approval from Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick for delays to May 2026 and then November 2026. Zelnick’s initial response was, “You’re kidding. Please tell me you’re kidding,” Kolbe recalled. She described GTA 6’s development as “not perfect,” but better than the process for Red Dead Redemption 2.
Rockstar’s head of development, Phil Hooker, described the production changes made during GTA 6’s development. “The engine, the tools, and the team we’ve built during this project will allow us to do things more quickly,” he said. Hooker added that the studio could build on its existing foundation instead of repeatedly redesigning it.
Art director and co-studio head Aaron Garbut said Rockstar had “foundationally changed a lot of stuff” for GTA 6. The studio does not plan to dismantle that foundation after the game’s release.
Rockstar has not announced a release date for a PC version of GTA 6. Reports have placed its potential launch as early as 2027. After that release, Rockstar could develop story content for GTA 6 or work on separate projects similar to Bully and Manhunt. GTA 5 did not receive a story expansion.
