Sony limits PS5 Disc Drive to one per order
PlayStation Direct now restricts purchases of the PS5 Disc Drive to one per order after Sony said it will stop producing new physical PlayStation game discs from January 2028.
Sony is limiting purchases of the PS5 Disc Drive to one per order on its PlayStation Direct store. The product page also warns there may be limits per household. The restriction follows Sony’s announcement that it will stop producing new physical PlayStation game discs starting January 2028. The company has not disclosed how many units remain in stock or how long the limit will stay in place.
The external Disc Drive lets consoles without an internal drive read physical PlayStation game discs and Blu-ray movies. Owners of the PS5 Digital Edition and the PS5 Pro must use the accessory to play physical discs unless they purchase a PS5 model with a built-in drive.
Buyers include players seeking continued access to existing disc libraries, collectors purchasing spare units, and potential resellers. PlayStation Direct has imposed one-per-order limits on other high-demand items in the past; this is the first major enforcement tied to Sony’s announcement about ending new disc production.
Sony has not said whether it will increase production of the Disc Drive, continue manufacturing the accessory after 2028, replenish PlayStation Direct stock, or expand availability through other retailers. PlayStation Direct’s product notes and Sony’s statement on ending disc production are the only public confirmations so far.
The company confirmed earlier this week that it will cease manufacturing new physical PlayStation game discs beginning in January 2028. Until Sony provides further details, customers attempting to buy the Disc Drive from PlayStation Direct may encounter per-order and household limits.
