The Alters: Last Variable DLC Arrives July 13
The Alters: Last Variable launches July 13 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, adding about 20 hours of story content, four Scientist Alters and expanded survival and research systems.
Developer 11 bit studios will release The Alters: Last Variable on July 13 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The paid expansion adds roughly 20 hours of story content and new gameplay systems to the base game.
Last Variable continues the story years after the original. The protagonist, Jan, elects to remain on the planet to study the Oasis and begins a new research project. To support the work he creates four Scientist Alters: a Geologist, Biologist, Chemist and Physicist. Each Alter offers specialised research paths and functions that change how players approach tasks on the planet.
The Scientist Alters allow players to terraform dead zones into areas that can support life, harvest and refine exotic materials, and advance higher-level projects. The game world reacts to research and terraforming: players can encounter earthquakes, radiation spikes and other environmental events tied to their activity.
Survival systems expand both on the surface and underground. The underground base gains new building options and dedicated research bays, plus a Cryosleep Chamber intended to let players take longer expeditions and accept greater risks away from base. Surface Field Labs let Alters continue research while Jan is inactive, supporting parallel workflows and extended missions.
Narrative and team management are more prominent in Last Variable. Alters develop individual priorities and viewpoints about the direction of research, and Jan must manage competing objectives. Player decisions affect interpersonal dynamics within the team and influence the long-term legacy left on the planet. 11 bit studios has described the expansion as a concluding chapter for Jan’s story.
Last Variable will be available digitally on release platforms from July 13. The expansion builds on the base game’s cloning and survival framework, adding new story beats alongside the enhanced research and base-management mechanics.
