11 Bit Studios released The Alters: Last Variable on July 13, 2026. The $14.99 story DLC is available on PC (Steam and Epic), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The publisher provided a review key for coverage.
The expansion continues the story of Jan the Scientist after the original game’s understated ending. Jan remains on the planet to study a persistent pocket of life called the Oasis. Over years he clones earlier versions of himself, forming a team of scientist alters including a geologist, biologist, chemist and physicist. The DLC focuses on that investigation rather than broader survival or emotional arcs from the base game.
Core gameplay from the original title remains in place. The ship is replaced by an underground base. The former solar maximum threat has been reworked into alternating hot and cold cycles: hot stretches permit exploration and resource gathering, cold cycles require retreat into the base and use of a cryogenic chamber and crafted radiation filters. Alter creation returns, with new clones differentiated by scientific specialties rather than a wide range of personalities.
The review includes two direct observations: “It doesn’t try to be a new game,” and “the constant pressure is still here.” The review notes that task pressure and tight time windows from the base game persist unchanged. The reviewer expected or hoped for optional adjustments to reduce that pressure but reports the systems function the same as in the original.
Visually and technically, the expansion uses the original game’s aesthetic without notable upgrades. Interiors retain a detailed, diorama-like presentation. The reviewer reported steady performance on a test PC with a Ryzen 9 5900X, an RTX 3080 Ti and 32 GB of RAM and did not encounter new technical issues. Sound design follows the base game’s approach, and voice actor Alex Jordan returns to voice the alters.
The review assigned an overall score of 8 out of 10 and reported an approximate playtime of 20 hours. The review materials list developer and publisher as 11 Bit Studios and Amazon MGM Studios, and the review was conducted on the PC configuration specified above.
