Total War: Warhammer 40k demo highlights cover and destruction
At BiliBili World in Shanghai, Creative Assembly showed an extended Total War: Warhammer 40k demo emphasizing cover, destructible environments and an Astra Militarum vs. Orks battle.
Creative Assembly presented an extended gameplay demo of Total War: Warhammer 40k at BiliBili World in Shanghai, showing how cover and destructible environments affect large-scale fights between the Astra Militarum and Ork forces.
The demo was narrated in Chinese and included full English subtitles supplied by the studio. The scenario centers on an Ork push toward a strategic city while the Imperium’s Astra Militarum defends the approaches and calls on orbital fire to weaken enemy formations before ground engagement.
Infantry units such as Cadian Shock Troopers and Kasrkin elites used walls and industrial structures for defensive bonuses and reduced enemy hit chance. Heavier troops like Ogryns fought without shelter but wielded powerful close-range weapons. Scout Sentinels provided mobility and long vision and were deployed behind supply trains to set up ambushes or flanking moves.
A river crossing and a single bridge created a chokepoint defended by a tank line led by a Baneblade. The tank placement forced Ork Meganobz to wade across the water and cluster together, after which Valkyrie rocket strikes were used against the concentrated attackers.
Ork tactics included Stormboyz equipped with jump packs that allowed them to clear obstacles and land directly among units taking cover, disrupting defensive formations. Forces hidden inside train carriages then pushed out to flank the Orks, showing how concealed positions can change an engagement.
The demo highlighted environment destruction as a tactical element. The narrator noted, “It is common across different battle maps to find many different buildings and objects that can be destroyed, opening up new tactics, routes, and strategies.” Demolishing structures created new approaches and removed enemy cover.
Later in the fight reinforcements were committed further back on the line, accompanied by the narration, “Sometimes sacrifices must be made. These men did their duty.” The Orks brought in towering Stompas, large walking war machines modeled after Gork and Mork, which prompted another call for orbital strikes. The sequence ended with a Lance Strike from a capital ship that concentrated a beam of energy against a Stompa’s armor.
Total War: Warhammer 40k does not have a release date. Creative Assembly has opened a Steam wishlist and a registration for a closed beta. The demo demonstrates how cover and environmental destruction will factor into combat in the studio’s first fully futuristic Total War title, while adapting mechanics familiar from earlier Warhammer entries to the 40k setting.
