Ubisoft tests Steam backend to remove Connect launcher

Ubisoft is piloting “Ubisoft Connect Services” on Steam with Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, letting cross-progression, challenges and rewards work without the Ubisoft Connect launcher.
Ubisoft is testing a backend called Ubisoft Connect Services on Steam with Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. The system lets cross-progression, in-game challenges and rewards function on Steam without requiring the Ubisoft Connect desktop launcher to remain installed.
The feature appears in the game’s latest update, which links the title to an entry labeled Ubisoft Connect Services in owners’ Steam libraries. The update note is visible only to Steam owners of the game and has been shared online by players.
Players must link a Ubisoft account to Steam the first time they run a supported title. After that initial link, the separate Ubisoft Connect client does not need to stay installed for linked features to work.
Ubisoft described the rollout as an initial effort to make launching its games on Steam smoother. The update reads: “We will continue to iterate and improve Ubisoft Connect Services over time, with the goal of delivering the features and services players use and expect while making the Steam experience as seamless as possible.”
If the trial is successful, Ubisoft plans to expand the system to additional titles. Possible candidates mentioned include Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six Siege, The Division 2 and Far Cry.
Ubisoft Connect has provided cross-play, progression tracking, in-game rewards and social features. Until now, many Steam players needed to open and sign into the separate desktop client even when launching games through Steam; the new backend keeps those services while letting supported games start directly from Steam.
