Valorant’s Summit adds permanent mid-round terrain changes

Riot Games will add Summit to Valorant’s competitive map pool on June 24. The map is set high in Chinese mountains at a former monastery where the agent Sage trained. Summit includes a dedicated Summit Only queue at launch.

Summit’s core mechanic uses shootable switches to close doors for the remainder of a round. Designers say once a door closes it cannot be reopened or restored during that round, which removes sightlines and changes retake paths.

Game designer Diego Varona framed the concept by asking, “What if a map could change permanently during a round?” He explained the team made the changes irreversible for each round. Varona added that walls and doors are not destructible and cannot be raised back up.

The permanent closures affect long-range setups and retake strategies. Varona warned that an Operator setup can be rendered unusable when a key angle disappears: “Hey, you have an Op? Your Op’s no good anymore because your angle’s gone – it’s never going to come back.” The map is smaller than recent additions Corrode and Abyss and emphasizes close-to-medium engagements when doors are closed.

Design choices include two spike-plant sites, three lanes, and a mix of traditional Asian architecture and the game’s brutalist style. Curved walls appear in the meditation garden for visual design, while combat corners remain right angles to preserve tactical peeking and cover.

Riot will reduce ranking risk for Summit during its first two weeks: losses will cost 50% less Ranked Rating while wins will award the full amount. The Summit launch coincides with Retake, a 3v3 post-spike mode with randomized loadouts and frequent side swaps. Riot is also releasing new Blackspyre weapon skins and a new Battle Pass alongside the map.

Marketing teasers released before launch referenced the mountain setting and links to Sage’s backstory. Riot describes Summit as combining a meditation center aesthetic with gameplay elements that change during rounds.
