WoW Midnight Patch Nerfs Unholy DKs, Buffs Several Specs

Blizzard reduced Unholy Death Knight Blightfall damage to 100% of remaining plague (from 200%) and rolled out targeted buffs and tuning ahead of patch 12.1.5.

Blizzard published World of Warcraft Midnight patch notes on Oct. 6, applying a set of class adjustments ahead of the full 12.1.5 update. The patch reduces the Unholy Death Knight Blightfall effect from 200% to 100% of remaining plague damage and makes a series of buffs to underperforming specializations.

The developer team said Unholy Death Knights were producing “significantly more damage than expected” from Blightfall, prompting the reduction. The initial changes went live during weekly maintenance on Oct. 6, with the full patch scheduled for Oct. 13 in North America and Oct. 14 in Europe.

Devourer Demon Hunters received multiple single-target damage increases to better match expected output. Consume/Devour and Reap/Cull each gain 8% damage, the primary-target damage for Eradicate and Collapsing Star is up 8%, and both The Hunt initial hit and Voidblade damage increase by 10%. These Demon Hunter adjustments do not apply in PvP.

Brewmaster Monks were granted survivability improvements for dungeon content. Quick Sip now purifies 8% of current stagger each time a player gains three seconds of stagger duration, up from 5%. The dodge bonus from Pretense of Instability after drinking a Brew now lasts eight seconds instead of five. Mistweaver Monks see a 15% increase to healing from Invigorating Mists, and Enveloping Mist gains 15% more healing in PvE to support raid performance.

Subtlety Rogues using the Trickster talent received increases after falling behind Deathstalker. Fazed’s damage boost rises from 5% to 7%, Unseen Blade deals 15% more damage, and Coup de Grace gets a 10% damage increase. The studio wrote the intent is for Trickster “to be a more viable alternative for players who prefer its gameplay and thematic identity.” These Rogue changes do not apply in PvP.

Enhancement Shamans are getting a 4% class-wide PvE increase to all ability and auto-attack damage, plus a 35% PvE damage boost to Lava Lash. PvP tuning in this patch includes buffs to several underperforming PvP talents and increases to tank-spec PvP talents that apply Focused Assault.

Blizzard listed further adjustments planned for patch 12.1.5, including additional Devourer Demon Hunter changes, a redesign of Restoration Druid’s Nature’s Bounty to reduce rotational friction, and further tweaks for Evokers, Hunters, Mages, Monks, Priests, Rogues, Shamans, and Warriors. Starting with the Oct. 6 update, an NPC vendor named Orin Straylight will offer an extra weekly Nebulous Voidcore for bonus rolls.

Patch 12.1.5 will also add new content: a focused single-boss raid against the Coiled Isle general Kith’ix, Labyrinths as larger-scale exploration instances, and zone-wide Aqir Invasions that chain multiple public events into a final boss encounter. The timing of the tuning notes and content drops lets players test the class changes in dungeons, raids, and PvP before the region-specific release dates.
