Pimax introduced the Dream Air headset with twin 3,840×3,552 OLED displays per eye, multi-layer pancake lenses and a reported 110° field of view at up to 90Hz. The company sells two tracking versions: a base-station model without front cameras or controllers priced at $1,999, and a SLAM version with four front-facing cameras and included controllers priced at $2,299.

The shell alone weighs about 170g, roughly 263g with the strap and about 330g when accounting for a meter of cable. The headset includes integrated side-strap speakers that project audio downward, automatic eye-tracking for interpupillary distance (IPD), and support for foveated rendering to reduce GPU workload.

Review testing noted deep blacks, vivid colors and a sharp image that largely removes the screen-door effect. The multi-layer pancake optics are used to deliver a wide field of view in a small form factor and the displays are OLED rather than LCD.

The review identified fit and optical limitations. The supplied facial foam is thin and not adjustable; small shifts in face or eye position changed the optical experience. Some users reported a tunneled or “looking down a tube” sensation, with softer edges and dimming at the periphery unless the headset was pressed close to the face. The Dream Air does not support wearing glasses; Pimax offers mounting points for prescription lenses but does not include alternate face cushions in the box.

Tracking choices present trade-offs. Outside-in tracking with base stations was reported as more robust and less prone to drift, but the non-SLAM version ships without controllers, requiring buyers who lack existing SteamVR base stations to purchase additional hardware. Reviewers recommended the SLAM model for buyers without an existing base-station setup.

Thermals and cable design were also noted. Two small fans run quieter than fans in some larger models but do not prevent the headset and cable from warming during use. The single thick cable terminates at a junction box that contains power, USB and video lines; reviewers observed the junction area could become warm against the neck.

In resolution terms, the Dream Air’s displays exceed most headsets that use lower-resolution LCD panels and are slightly lower in pixel-per-degree than Pimax’s own Crystal Super. Competing lightweight headsets use lower-resolution panels and some include custom face cushions and lower prices.

A reviewer wrote: “The Pimax Dream Air is an incredible VR headset that delivers arguably the best image quality currently available in any headset,” and added that “the optical characteristics of this headset are likely to be divisive.”

Pimax ships the Dream Air with the headset, cable and a power supply. Buyers should confirm the tracking package they order and factor in accessory costs for controllers or base stations, and for aftermarket face foam or prescription lenses. The headset requires a high-performance GPU to run high-resolution content.
