A Brazilian lawmaker warned in recent public remarks that Grand Theft Auto 6 could mark an end to retail game discs, citing the title’s expected file size and online distribution as reasons discs may be impractical for major releases.

The lawmaker pointed to large download sizes, frequent online updates and publishers’ growing use of digital storefronts and cloud delivery as factors that reduce demand for physical discs. No distribution plans from the game’s publisher were cited in the remarks.

The comments focused on consequences for Brazilian consumers and retailers. Fewer boxed releases could reduce shelf space and revenues at brick-and-mortar stores, limit options for buyers with slow or capped internet connections and change how used-game markets operate.

The lawmaker raised concerns about access and ownership. Digital-only releases can complicate resale, gifting and long-term preservation of games, issues that particularly affect consumers with limited broadband.

Officials in other markets have examined consumer protection and tax rules for digital content. The Brazilian official urged publishers, retailers and regulators to discuss measures to preserve consumer choice and market competition.

No new legislation was proposed in the remarks and no response from the game’s publisher was referenced.

Industry observers note that the games sector has shifted to digital distribution over the past decade, with downloads, online updates and cloud services accounting for a growing share of sales. Improvements in storage and internet speeds have made large digital releases more common, while concerns about broadband access and data caps persist.

Regulators and retailers are monitoring publishers’ announcements about distribution for major upcoming titles to assess effects on physical retail and consumer rights.
