Organizers have promoted the campaign on social media and community forums.

Rockstar did not provide sales projections. The company pointed to franchise loyalty, preorders and marketing reach as factors that reduce the chance a short-term campaign will alter launch performance.

Groups and individuals behind the campaign have given a range of reasons for urging a coordinated refusal to buy the game. The effort has circulated in online communities and forums, but participation levels and duration remain unclear.

Analysts and industry observers say the effectiveness of a consumer boycott depends on how many customers take part and how long they sustain the action. Video game sales often rely on preorders, franchise loyalty and large marketing campaigns that can blunt short-term pressure.

Independent fan sites and community services continue to publish news, guides and alerts about the game and note they are not affiliated with Rockstar Games or publisher Take-Two Interactive.
