The creator of Grand Theft Auto acknowledged that physical game discs are becoming less common and attributed the shift to economic and technological factors. In recent remarks he said digital distribution has become the practical default for many new releases and called for measures to protect collectors and long-term access to games.

He explained that producing and distributing discs adds cost and complexity for publishers and retailers. Digital downloads, cloud streaming and subscription services simplify delivery, allow faster updates and remove inventory limits, reducing the need to press multiple disc versions or ship physical copies.

The creator identified risks tied to a mostly digital market. Collectors who value boxed editions and physical extras could lose secondary markets and artifacts tied to a game’s launch. More broadly, he pointed to long-term access issues: when online services close or publishers stop supporting older titles, games can become unavailable if there are no physical backups or archived copies.

He urged publishers to adopt standards that protect owners, proposing options such as transferable licenses and low-cost offline installers so buyers can retain playable copies. He also recommended coordinated preservation efforts, including industry archives and partnerships with libraries and museums to maintain playable versions for future study.

Regarding post-launch support, he noted that online patching and live services reduce the logistical burden of releasing and updating discs. At the same time, reliance on always-online features ties a game’s lifespan to servers and publisher maintenance, which can end access when support stops.

On retail, he expects demand for special editions with discs and physical extras to persist among collectors, while standard releases increasingly move to digital-only formats because of tighter margins and the costs of manufacturing, packaging and shipping. As one option, publishers could sell physical memorabilia bundled with digital codes for the game itself.

He also discussed environmental and supply-chain factors. Manufacturing discs and packaging consumes materials and requires transport, which adds cost and can be disrupted. Shifting sales to digital reduces those variables, but he emphasized the need for ownership safeguards regardless of environmental benefits.

Industry data show sales of physical video games have declined as digital storefronts, online updates and subscription models have expanded. Collector markets for boxed editions and vintage titles remain active, and preservation advocates have warned that digital-only ecosystems can leave games inaccessible when servers shut down or licenses lapse.

In his closing remarks he stated that physical discs may become rare for mainstream releases and called on companies to plan for longevity and for ways to respect both modern distribution and the cultural value of keeping games playable for future generations.
