At Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest Berlin 2026, Game Director Naoki Yoshida introduced the Bastion, the first new main-tank job for the Evercold expansion, and presented key features slated ahead of Evercold\u2019s January 2027 release. He confirmed an early story preview will arrive with patch 7.56 on September 8 and showed in-development footage of new zones and raid concepts.<\/p>
Yoshida presented the Bastion on stage wearing the class gear and described its dual gunshield design. The weapon set flips between a clawed melee mode and a triple-barrelled artillery configuration called the Skyltborg. The Bastion will serve as a primary tank in Evercold\u2019s Evolved Mode, begin play in Limsa Lominsa at level 90, and will be exclusive to the Evolved ruleset. Yoshida said the job provides defensive and curative boons for allies and noted its cultural history in Aerslaent.<\/p>
The expansion centers on a reflected world known as The Fourth and five massive, element-attuned Realmships. Yoshida revealed Naglfar, a water-aligned Realmship with open fields and a hub town called Falgarthr, and Hringhorni, a fire-aligned ship. The Evercold trailer included new story images such as heavy artillery companions, a towering fire giant and scenes showing Reaper-mode combat.<\/p>
Yoshida outlined changes to progression. The main story will remain central, but after a shared introduction players can complete three regional arcs in any order, with each arc including its own dungeon. To support different player paths, selected missions and instances will use auto-balancing so enemy and duty difficulty can scale based on a player\u2019s position in the expansion. Yoshida asked players to “Trust us.” He also confirmed changes to gear distribution and that the game will shift from daily resets to week-based resets, with a two-patch seasonal cadence and no season passes or extra charges.<\/p>
Creative Studio 3 will expand customization with a redesigned character screen and a system to transfer a capped job\u2019s item level to another capped job for faster entry into endgame content. The team announced Character Action Skins-unlockable alternate animations for emotes and job actions that players can assign. Early sets will emphasize general actions, with select job actions arriving in patch 8.1. Yoshida cautioned that animations take time and noted, “Please note, changing your character’s action will not affect your DPS – only your emotional DPS.” Patch 8.1 will also add visual toggles for certain nose shading and warpaint, and allow Au Ra horn styles to be set independently of face shapes.<\/p>
On large-scale content, the development team described a system currently called “World Raids” and potential features such as auto-travel and pathing markers to aid navigation. A third difficulty tier for eight-player raids will sit between Normal and Savage to bridge the gap in player completion rates; this tier will be supported by a seasonal gear track, and experienced players can skip it if they choose. The eight-player raid series titled “Beyond the Lifestream” will tie into Final Fantasy VII, and Yoshida brought Final Fantasy VII Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi on stage to discuss collaboration plans. An FFVII-themed Gold Saucer update is scheduled for October 28, adding a typing-based minigame called Keybound Brawler and cosmetics based on Barrett and Tifa, including a minigun accessory.<\/p>
Yoshida provided updates on server and social features: same-region player matching will begin testing on October 12 in Japan before expanding to other territories. Work continues on dungeons, gear sets and crafting recipes. Duty Support will receive upgrades beginning with Chocobo improvements; patch 8.1 will allow light dungeon parties of two players and their Chocobos, and patch 8.2 will expand Chocobo breeding and commands, adding new uses for Gysahl Greens.
