A YouTube channel reposted copies of the official Grand Theft Auto VI trailers roughly one year after the publisher first released them. The uploads appeared on a separate channel and matched the original trailers that circulated at launch.

The reposts arrived after many original posts and news items had been replaced by newer coverage. Several of the reuploaded files lacked original metadata such as the initial upload date, publisher notes and captions that accompanied the first releases.

Archivists and industry observers point to specific reasons why copies resurface long after original publication. Official channels sometimes remove or geoblock videos for marketing, regional licensing or legal reasons, which can leave gaps in what is available to the public. Independent reuploads can restore access but often omit metadata that researchers use to verify provenance.

YouTube’s Content ID and takedown processes enable rights holders to request removal of unauthorized copies. Enforcement of those systems is inconsistent, leaving some reuploads online while others are taken down. Platform ranking and recommendation algorithms also affect how easy it is to find older or reuploaded videos, meaning copies may remain hidden outside fan communities.

Rights holders retain the ability to assert claims over game names, logos and trailer footage; those marks are registered to the publisher. Independent channels and outlets that cover the game commonly include disclaimers stating they are not affiliated with the publisher and rely on continued access to source media for their reporting.

People involved in digital preservation have proposed coordinated archiving practices that combine official releases, mirrored copies and careful preservation of metadata. At the same time, copyright and licensing rules enforced by platforms and publishers limit how and where copies are kept available over time.

The reposted trailers illustrate practical challenges for locating, verifying and preserving high-profile promotional material on major video platforms. The episode details how platform policies, rights enforcement and community archiving practices affect the long-term availability of digital media.
