The film generated additional revenue from merchandise and licensing, but those streams did not push totals past the targeted figure in the initial reporting period.

Analysts pointed to several factors that limited the film’s ability to match the GTA milestone: box office revenue split across theatrical, premium video-on-demand and later streaming windows; competition from other new releases; and the front-loaded nature of theatrical launches. Grand Theft Auto’s record was built over many platform launches and periodic re-releases that produced sustained sales.

Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive did not comment on the comparison. Sony and its distribution partners issued routine statements highlighting audience reception and reviews but did not confirm expectations tied to the GTA metric.

Grand Theft Auto remains one of the highest-earning interactive entertainment properties, with multiple entries and reissues generating long-term sales. The Spider-Man film’s immediate commercial performance showed strong consumer interest while falling short of the specific GTA benchmark in the opening window.

Sony’s new Spider-Man film opened strongly but did not surpass a Grand Theft Auto cross-platform sales and engagement benchmark in
