Dota 2 download size is one of those numbers that never stays useful for long. Valve drops another patch, the files change, and an old guide can suddenly be off by several gigabytes. There’s another catch too: what Steam downloads and what Dota 2 eventually takes up on your drive are two different numbers.

I checked the current 2026 figures and, below, I’ll show you where to find the same information in Steam yourself. I’ll also explain why some updates need more free space than their download size suggests. Then you can get back to ranked, learn a new hero, or look for ways to improve your Dota 2 rating.

Dota 2 Download Size in 2026: How Many GB Is It?

As of August 12, 2026, SteamDB puts the Dota 2 download size at about 33 GB. Once installed, the Windows version takes up roughly 72 GB with English selected and no DLC. So how many GB is Dota 2? It depends on whether you mean the compressed download or the space the finished installation occupies.

Steam isn’t sending you the full 72 GB over the internet. The Dota 2 download comes compressed, then Steam installs the game files locally. That’s where the bigger number comes from.

What is the download size of Dota 2? That figure matters for bandwidth and download time. The Dota 2 size in GB after installation is the number to check if you’re trying to squeeze the game onto an SSD or an older HDD.

Steam’s own store page makes this a little messy. The Dota 2 system requirements still list 60 GB of available storage, while the current Windows installation can already go beyond that. I wouldn’t plan a fresh install around the 60 GB figure.

Around 90–100 GB free is a much safer starting point, although Valve doesn’t list that as an official requirement. The extra space gives Steam somewhere to work when patches arrive and temporary update files are created. And since the Dota 2 download size in 2026 will keep shifting as new builds roll out, keeping a bit of headroom saves trouble later.

How to Check Dota 2 Download Size on Steam

Before you trust any number from a guide, check your own Steam client. Builds change, libraries grow, and sometimes the game is sitting on a completely different drive than you remember. Steam will show you exactly how much space your local copy uses.

That’s also worth checking before you download Dota 2. You clear what looks like enough space, start the install, and then realize the SSD is almost full because half your Steam library is already there. Better to check first.

For an installed copy:

  1. Open Steam and go to the Library.

  2. Right-click Dota 2.

  3. Select Properties.

  4. Open Installed Files.

  5. Check the space used on the drive.

The figure you see there is the installed size on your PC. It isn’t the compressed Dota 2 Steam download size that Steam transferred when you installed the game.

That difference is also why Dota 2 download size on Steam can vary depending on what a source is measuring. One page may be quoting the download itself; another may be talking about the finished game folder.

Need to check the drive too? Go to Steam → Settings → Storage. You’ll see where Dota 2 is installed, how much space your Steam games are using, and how much room is still available. Very useful if you’ve split your library between an SSD and an HDD.

The base game costs nothing to install. The official Steam page offers the Dota 2 as a free download, so there’s no purchase step before you start.

How Updates Affect Dota 2 Download Size

Dota 2 doesn’t simply get bigger every time Valve pushes a patch. Some updates add plenty of new material: heroes, event files, models, textures, audio, or changes to the game itself. Others mostly swap old data for new. So the Dota 2’s GB size in GB can move in either direction, or barely change at all.

Say Steam shows a 5 GB update. That doesn’t mean your Dota 2 folder will suddenly be 5 GB larger once it’s done. Steam may replace existing files, rebuild parts of a package, and throw out data the game no longer needs. The Dota 2 download size on PC during a patch is only the transfer size, not a preview of the final install size.

The annoying part is that an update can still ask for more free space than expected. Steam sometimes needs room for the new files and the old ones at the same time while it works through the patch. On a nearly full SSD, that can be enough to stop the update.

You don’t need to keep half the drive empty for Dota 2. Just avoid running it right at the limit. A bit of spare room is usually enough to make future patches far less troublesome.
