Sony has clarified that games bought from its digital store are granted as licenses to users rather than as owned copies. The company’s user agreement and recent communications explain that purchases provide permission to use the software under conditions set by Sony rather than transferring property to the buyer.

According to the company’s wording, a digital purchase gives the account holder the right to download and play a title while the license remains in effect. Access can depend on account standing, regional availability and the terms laid out in the agreement.

Licensed access can be revoked if an account is suspended or banned, if a title is removed from the digital store, or if online services required for a game are discontinued. The terms also limit resale and transfer of digital copies, distinguishing them from physical discs or cartridges, which typically allow resale and permanent ownership where available.

Sony describes the license model as a way to enforce content rules, provide updates and protect intellectual property. The company points customers who need permanent, transferable ownership to physical media when it is offered.

Platform holders and publishers commonly use license agreements for downloadable content. Regulators and courts in several jurisdictions have reviewed disputes over digital access, and some consumer groups have requested clearer disclosures about rights and restrictions at the point of sale.

Consumers are advised to review platform terms of service and purchase policies before buying digital titles, consider physical copies if ownership and resale are important, and retain records of transactions and account information. Monitoring service announcements about delistings and server shutdowns can help users assess ongoing access to purchased digital content.
