Blizzard announced during a livestream for the World of Warcraft Forever beta that it will aggressively punish players who buy in-game gold. The studio warned that violations of rules on third-party transactions could result in permanent account bans and that some player-run systems linked to gold trading will be restricted.<\/p>
Community Manager Randy “Kaivax” Jordan and Senior Game Designer Josh Greenfield outlined the measures during the beta event. The team framed the actions as efforts to protect the game’s economy and keep group content accessible to new players.<\/p>
Developers identified GDKP as a particular concern. GDKP refers to groups that auction raid or dungeon loot for in-game gold and then split the proceeds. Greenfield warned that when auction-based loot distribution becomes common it can overtake traditional guild structures and create barriers for newer or less wealthy players. He added that the practice can overlap with real-money trading, but the primary issue is its effect on group dynamics and access to content.<\/p>
Blizzard described a multi-layered approach to enforcement and economic balance. Greenfield described backend tools that let the team adjust item drop rates and resource availability to change replay value and reduce pressure on players to buy gold. He used the phrase ‘levers we can pull and knobs we can turn’ to explain those tools.<\/p>
On enforcement, Greenfield acknowledged the developer had been lenient toward gold buyers in the past: ‘Being frank, we’ve probably been too lenient on gold buyers, and it’s been a little bit easy to get around some of our actions.’ He urged players not to risk permanent account loss by buying gold.<\/p>
