Xbox Pictures will develop film, television and other scripted projects based on Xbox characters and fictional worlds. Xbox Products will create merchandise and other products for fans. Xbox Partnerships will work with creators, brands and communities on collaborations, sponsorships and related projects.

Xbox has previously expanded several franchises beyond games. Minecraft has received film and television adaptations, while Gears of War has had a merchandise line.

Walters joined Microsoft after serving as chief expansion officer at Epic Games. She spent 13 years at Lucasfilm, where she worked on franchise development for Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

At Mojang, Walters helped expand Minecraft’s sales and merchandise business. Minecraft has sold more than 425 million copies, according to the source, and its franchise became one of the 20 largest global franchises during her tenure. Minecraft: The Movie recorded the highest-grossing opening weekend for a video game adaptation and later topped the domestic box office.
