The projects are unsupported and run third-party code on users’ computers.

The warning follows the release of several mods that add first-person and third-person play. First Person View, created by “Mr Queeges,” arrived in August. It uses Project Zomboid’s Lua modding tools and can be installed through the game’s established modding system. The mod changes the camera angle without rebuilding the game world, so buildings and objects may look unusual from the new view.

Project Viewpoint, created by “ellu” and “norkus,” and pz3d, created by “kolpaque,” followed in September. Both projects redesign parts of the game world in 3D and support first-person and third-person play.

Project Viewpoint and pz3d use Java, the programming language used in Project Zomboid’s source code, instead of the Lua framework intended for standard mod development. They are not installed through Steam Workshop. Players must use Zombie Buddy, a third-party tool distributed through GitHub.

Java gives the mods access to parts of the game that Lua mods normally cannot change. The Indie Stone described the difference this way: “If a Lua mod repaints your house and adds new wallpaper, a Java mod builds a new house nearby, which could even be built without you knowing, and then have an additional, unseen back door.”

The developer stressed that using Java does not prove that a mod creator has harmful intentions or that a mod will damage a computer. The software does run third-party code on the player’s machine, which creates a higher security risk than installing standard game content.

In a statement, The Indie Stone wrote: “We have to stress that Java-based mods, including third-party loaders, frameworks, and modifications that alter the game’s underlying implementation, are not officially supported.” The developer cannot provide security protections or technical support for those projects.

Java-based mods can also stop working after Project Zomboid updates because they depend on internal code that may change without notice. Mods written in Lua can also break after updates, but Java projects may require larger changes when the game’s code changes.

The Indie Stone investigates bug reports only when the problem can be reproduced in an unmodified version of Project Zomboid. Players who install Java mods were advised to look for open-source projects, reproducible builds and community feedback about safety and reliability.

Steam Workshop offers user reviews and tools for flagging or reporting problematic mods, although those features do not guarantee that every mod is safe. The developer described its warning as general guidance rather than a judgment on individual creators or players.

The Indie Stone warned that
