PlayerUnknown Productions has stopped active development on its survival game Prologue, removed the title from Steam Early Access and made it available as a free download. The studio issued a final update and is offering refunds to anyone who previously purchased the game.<\/p>
The company said it will continue work on the game’s underlying technology, Melba, with a smaller team while it seeks partners to resume development in some form. Funding difficulties were cited as the reason for pausing full production.<\/p>
The final update adds a trails system that links nearby cabins and shelters and can extend to other clusters. Players can change settings to increase the distance between connected locations, although longer links raise the likelihood of unexpected cutoffs and occasional dead ends. The patch also introduces a handheld weather monitor, with higher-tier versions that display humidity and temperature, and a waterproof spray that protects clothing and fragile items such as paper and matches.<\/p>
Additional changes include improvements to cooking mechanics, liquid handling, item descriptions, visual effects such as lighting and fog, and more consistent audio. The studio left game files unencrypted to support community modding; official mod support and documentation were planned but not completed for lack of time and resources.<\/p>
A developer build is available through Steam\u2019s library under the ‘game versions and betas’ menu. That build includes a developer menu accessed with the ‘=’ key that allows spawning items, changing time and weather, flying across the map or teleporting, and other testing tools.<\/p>
Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene wrote that he had been able to keep the studio operating for a time but could not sustain full development alone. He thanked the team for their professionalism and the community for its suggestions and creativity. Greene added that the studio will continue to look for the right collaborators to advance the project.<\/p>
Players who bought Prologue can request a refund through Steam\u2019s standard refund process at any point within 60 days by selecting discontinued development as the reason; the developer says it has informed Steam support and expects those refund requests to be approved. Purchasers who accept a refund can re-add the game to their Steam library for free afterward.<\/p>
Prologue launched in Early Access as an experimental survival experience under PlayerUnknown Productions, the studio founded by the creator of PUBG.
