Xbox creates XP division for film, TV and live events
Microsoft has created Xbox XP to expand its game franchises into film, television, merchandise, live events and brand partnerships. Kayleen Walters will lead the division.
Microsoft has created Xbox XP, a division focused on expanding Xbox franchises beyond video games. The division will develop film and television projects, merchandise, live events and partnerships with brands, creators and communities.
Kayleen Walters, a former Epic Games executive who also worked at Lucasfilm and Mojang, will serve as Xbox XP’s president. The division will bring together teams responsible for entertainment adaptations, consumer products, partnerships and live experiences.
Xbox XP will operate alongside Xbox’s game studios and external partners. Microsoft said game development will remain central to each franchise. Microsoft corporate strategy officer Matthew Bootle described games as remaining “at the heart” of Xbox’s efforts during a press briefing.
Xbox Pictures will develop film, television and other scripted projects based on Xbox characters and fictional worlds. Xbox Products will create merchandise and other products for fans. Xbox Places will focus on physical events, attractions, experiences and broadcasts. Xbox Partnerships will work with creators, brands and communities on collaborations, sponsorships and related projects.
Xbox has previously expanded several franchises beyond games. Minecraft has received film and television adaptations, while Gears of War has had a merchandise line.
Walters joined Microsoft after serving as chief expansion officer at Epic Games. She spent 13 years at Lucasfilm, where she worked on franchise development for Star Wars and Indiana Jones.
At Mojang, Walters helped expand Minecraft’s sales and merchandise business. Minecraft has sold more than 425 million copies, according to the source, and its franchise became one of the 20 largest global franchises during her tenure. Minecraft: The Movie recorded the highest-grossing opening weekend for a video game adaptation and later topped the domestic box office.
