Xbox launches disc-to-digital feature for physical games

Microsoft is introducing a disc-to-digital program for Xbox Insiders that lets owners of eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs redeem physical copies as digital licenses. The digital license is added to the player’s Microsoft account and can be downloaded and played without buying the game again.

To redeem a title, users insert a supported disc into an Xbox One or an Xbox Series X console with a disc drive. The console issues the corresponding digital license to the account. Microsoft states the digital version retains benefits that applied to the physical copy, including Xbox Play Anywhere compatibility and access to cloud gaming where supported.

When a redeemed disc is transferred to a new owner, the associated digital license moves with the disc and becomes tied to the new account. The original owner loses access to that digital license after resale unless they keep another valid copy. While they still own the disc, players can switch between using the physical disc and the linked digital download.

The feature is available initially only to members of the Xbox Insider Program. Microsoft has not given a timetable for a wider public release or published a complete list of eligible discs. Consoles without a disc drive, such as the Xbox Series S, are not included in the rollout.

Microsoft has not specified whether there will be fees, geographic limits, or caps on the number of titles a user can redeem. Details on how multi-disc games, special editions and used-game market scenarios will be handled have not been released.

The disc-to-digital program follows Xbox efforts to link physical media with account-based digital ownership while maintaining the ability to resell physical copies. Microsoft says it will provide further technical specifics and a public launch date in future announcements.
