Aion 2 emphasizes deep character creation and a much larger world
NCSoft revealed Aion 2 at Summer Game Fest, spotlighting detailed character customization, a game world 36 times larger than the original, expanded cosmetics and cooperative combat.
NCSoft presented Aion 2 at Summer Game Fest, describing the sequel as a next-entry to the original Aion with a much larger map and expanded personalization. The developer said the new game world is 36 times the size of the first release and highlighted exploration, customization and art production as primary focuses.
The preview emphasized character creation tools that let players change fine facial features such as jawline, eye shape and ear height, and randomize combinations. Personalization extends beyond initial creation into persistent collections: players can collect and equip wings, pets, weapons and cosmetic skins to shape an avatar’s appearance. Wings permit free flight when not in active combat and are designed to visually express a character’s style.
Exploration is tied to progression. Players will search the large map for cosmetic gear, new weapons and companion pets. Many pets are variants of enemies found in the environment and can be acquired by locating them in the world, completing quests or finishing dungeons. Examples shown at the preview included large Ifrit-style beasts, slimes, a teapot, a moon and a rabbit-like creature, covering a wide range of sizes and tones.
NCSoft described a technology it is patenting that helps characters sit and ride on unconventional mounts and companions so animations look natural when a character rides a moon or a giant rabbit. The studio framed that system as a way to keep interactions visually consistent across different companion pairings.
The preview included demonstrations of combat and cooperative play. While hands-on combat was not available, NCSoft showed encounters where player skills interact to create stronger effects when coordinated. In one boss example, a player created a ring around the enemy; teammates attacking from inside that ring could defeat the boss more efficiently. Developers described dungeon encounters as requiring coordinated actions rather than solo play with others nearby.
Art production and fidelity were frequent topics. The team noted that a large art staff worked on the project; when asked about the art-team size, the developers laughed and responded, “a lot yeah, don’t ask.” They pointed to detailed modeling and intricate visual interactions for wings, companions and environmental elements across the expanded world.
Aion first launched in South Korea nearly 18 years ago and retained popularity in East Asian markets. NCSoft positioned Aion 2 as a high-fantasy MMO that expands the original’s aesthetic with greater emphasis on player-driven appearance and exploration. No global release date was announced at the Summer Game Fest preview, and NCSoft indicated further hands-on testing and demonstrations are planned as development continues.
