Bethesda Names The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel

Bethesda has named The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, more than eight years after its 2018 teaser. The studio has not announced a release date, platforms or gameplay details.

Bethesda Game Studios has revealed The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, more than eight years after the game was first teased. The studio has not announced a release date, supported platforms or gameplay details.

The title appeared at the end of a video marking Bethesda Game Studios’ 40th anniversary. Bethesda confirmed that the name refers to the game’s setting, saying it was pleased to “finally reveal the name and location.”

In Elder Scrolls lore, Sentinel is a major port city in Hammerfell, the desert province associated with the Redguards. Fans have linked the game to Hammerfell since Bethesda released a short teaser in 2018 that showed a coastal landscape.

Development is continuing, but Bethesda added that “it’ll be some time before we’re ready to share more.” The announcement included the game’s title and logo, with no footage or release information.

The reveal came at the end of a video featuring Bethesda director Todd Howard, who visited the company’s original offices in Bethesda, Maryland. Howard discussed the studio’s early games, including the American football title Gridiron and its Terminator games, before looking back at The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Skyrim.

Howard described Skyrim as Bethesda’s most-played game 15 years after its release. He also recalled the team’s reaction when Microsoft increased the Xbox 360’s memory specification from 256MB to 512MB, saying he had “never seen programmers happier.”

The Elder Scrolls VI was first announced at E3 in 2018 with a brief title card and a view of a coastline. Bethesda has since released Fallout 76 and Starfield. Microsoft acquired Bethesda’s parent company, ZeniMax Media, in 2021. Skyrim, the previous mainline game in the series, was released in 2011.

Before revealing The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, Howard said Bethesda was looking ahead to the future of the Fallout franchise.
