Bungie Plans Destiny 2 Unvaulting as Marathon Rift Persists

Bungie is testing Destiny 2’s unvaulting project ahead of full production in early 2027 and says tensions between its Destiny and Marathon communities need to heal.

Bungie is expanding its plans for Destiny 2 beyond restoring vaulted content. The game’s unvaulting project is in pre-production, with full production expected to begin in January or February 2027. The production phase is expected to take about 12 months.

The project followed Bungie’s decision to reverse plans announced after Destiny 2’s June update, which had been described as the game’s final update. The studio changed course in September after players shared their experiences with the game and criticized plans to leave removed content unavailable.

Josh Deane, Bungie’s head of product, described repairing trust and making Destiny 2 “whole” as the studio’s first goals. He said unvaulting was originally created to address technical problems, but removing older content fragmented the game and damaged its relationship with players.

Bungie is testing the restoration process and checking whether the returned content meets its quality standards. The initial focus is on campaigns, strikes and raids from expansions removed from Destiny 2. Planned content includes the Red War campaign from the game’s launch, along with material from Forsaken, Curse of Osiris and Warmind.

Menagerie, a six-player activity, is also part of the initial plan. Bungie is considering additional content, including free-roam destinations, seasonal activities, player-versus-player maps and weapon updates for raids and raid lairs. Changes to the New Light experience and seasonal hubs are under consideration, though those additions could reduce the amount of future content the studio can develop.

Bungie is also working on a phased plan for Destiny 2. It includes new updates, the return of legacy content from the past decade and a third part that has not been disclosed. The studio expects to provide more information around February 2027.

“It was necessary for that moment to not be a funeral; it had to be a battle cry,” Deane said of the player response to the earlier plans. He added that Bungie is “playing from behind” and will need to make difficult choices during the restoration work.

The studio is working on Destiny 2 while preparing Marathon Symbiosis for release in December 2026. Some players have argued that support for one game limits support for the other. Deane said Bungie believes both games need to succeed.

“The Destiny and Marathon communities need to heal,” Deane said. He described the period as one that will help determine Bungie’s future direction.
