CD Projekt RED targets 2028 release for The Witcher 4
CD Projekt RED says The Witcher 4 will star Ciri, targets a 2028 launch and will not be shown at Gamescom 2026.
CD Projekt RED confirmed in a video that The Witcher 4 is aiming for a 2028 release and will feature Ciri as the lead character. CEO Michał Nowakowski outlined the update while discussing the studio’s plans for the series.
The studio describes the game as a single-player, open-world action RPG with a dark-fantasy narrative, developed on Unreal Engine 5. CD Projekt RED said more than 500 developers are now working on the project.
In the video, Nowakowski said the team “wanted to make something big” and that the new game will begin a trilogy focused on Ciri. No specific release date or detailed development roadmap was provided beyond the 2028 target.
The company had previously indicated the title would not arrive before 2027. The new guidance gives an official target year but includes a warning that the game may still be several years away.
The Witcher 4 will not appear at Gamescom 2026. CD Projekt RED plans to promote The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past, an expansion set for 2027, during Gamescom Opening Night Live and at its booth. The studio will run REDstreams during the show and said there could be a few surprises, though new Witcher 4 footage or a gameplay presentation is unlikely.
CD Projekt RED suggested players might see a gameplay demo or trailer before year-end. The game’s official page currently hosts only the cinematic reveal trailer and an Unreal Engine 5 technology presentation.
The studio described the project as its largest and most ambitious title to date, with a focus on action-oriented combat, a large open world and a narrative intended to support the planned trilogy.
