Lego Skylines: a friendlier city builder with deep systems

Iceflake Studios previewed Lego Skylines at a recent event. The game is a career-mode city builder that uses guided tutorials and citizen requests to introduce players to building and management.

Career mode opens with a family moving into the area and uses their needs to teach gameplay. Early tasks ask players to place houses, connect roads and add shops. Progression follows specific requests from residents rather than an open-ended start.

Many early objectives focus on “appeal.” Residents request particular styles or decorations around their homes — more greenery, formal ornaments or historical themes — and players place items to meet those tastes.

Visual design is central. Buildings assemble brick by brick and character models move like Lego figures. Iceflake Studios noted that “everything you build in the game is something you could build in real life with the same blocks the game uses.”

Core city systems remain part of play. Water, power and waste systems are required to keep towns functional. The preview showed those systems are introduced so they are manageable in smaller settlements, with room to scale as cities expand.

The studio demonstrated a large, developer-built city to show potential scale. The demo included distinct districts, a downtown area, bridges to islands and active pedestrian traffic. Iceflake indicated it has access to a broad range of Lego intellectual properties and plans to add licensed content after launch, while prioritizing core gameplay first.

Iceflake framed the onboarding design as a way to broaden the game’s audience. The combination of step-by-step tutorials and citizen-driven objectives is presented as a route to make the genre more approachable for newcomers while retaining systems for experienced players.
